Garbage In, Hallucination Out: The Bear-Market Case for Refusing to Speculate

ProPomp

Hook

Last week I read a research report that contained no research.

Nine analytical dimensions. Technical. Token economics. Market structure. Ecosystem positioning. Regulatory exposure. Governance. Risk. Narrative. Supply-chain transmission. Every single field โ€” every one โ€” read the same three characters: N/A.

The upstream data feed had failed. The pipeline that was supposed to strip a source article into a list of atomic facts returned an empty set. No title. No project name. No information points. Nothing.

Most desks would have buried that. They would have prompted the model to "fill in the gaps," and the model would have obliged โ€” inventing a token supply, a vesting cliff, a founding team. A hallucination dressed as analysis.

This report refused. It flagged the failure, mapped the damage, and stopped. That is the only honest output I have seen this month, and it is worth more than every confident call built on air.

Context

We are in a bear market. That matters more than most readers want to admit.

Garbage In, Hallucination Out: The Bear-Market Case for Refusing to Speculate

In a bull market, the cost of a bad assumption is a missed gain. In a bear market, the cost of a bad assumption is your principal. The asymmetry has flipped, and the research industry has not noticed. Desks are still producing the same volume of "conviction" โ€” same length, same confidence, same tone โ€” as if nothing changed.

Meanwhile the market is bleeding. Over the past seven days, several mid-cap protocols have shed a large share of their liquidity providers, and the exit has not been orderly. The incentive programs that padded those TVL numbers have been quietly wound down, and the deposits that only existed for the subsidy have gone with them. Liquidity is a ghost; it vanishes when you blink.

Garbage In, Hallucination Out: The Bear-Market Case for Refusing to Speculate

So the pressure on analysts is enormous. You cannot publish "I don't know." Your editor wants a call. Your clients want a level. Your timeline wants a take. And the fastest way to manufacture a take when you have no data is to invent one.

That is the trap. It is not a new trap. It is the same mechanism that turned every ICO whitepaper in 2017 into a "revolution," every algorithmic stablecoin in 2021 into a "paradigm," and every unbacked yield farm in 2020 into a "sustainable model." The narrative is always cheapest to produce at the exact moment the data is scarcest. I have watched three full cycles of this, and the pattern never changes: the loudest conclusions arrive when the evidence is thinnest.

Core

Here is the mechanical problem. I audit the code, not the promises โ€” and the same discipline applies to research itself.

A research pipeline is a chain of custody. The source article is the raw evidence. The first pass strips it into information points โ€” the smallest verifiable units of fact. Every downstream conclusion inherits its validity from those units. Break the first link and the entire structure is fiction. It does not degrade gracefully. It collapses silently, and from the outside it looks identical to a working pipeline.

The empty report exposed exactly this. Nine dimensions, all nine anchored to the same empty evidence set. Technical analysis needs a technical claim โ€” none existed, so the framework could not even classify the asset as L1, L2, application, or infrastructure. Token economics needs a token โ€” none was identified, so supply, allocation, and unlock schedules were all unknowable. Regulatory analysis needs a jurisdiction โ€” none was stated, so the four prongs of the Howey test were unanswerable. Every cell inherited its emptiness from the same broken source.

The report did something most humans will not: it published the gap. It stated, in effect, that the only thing it could rate with high confidence was the absence of information. Then it flagged the real risk โ€” that the data link itself had failed, either through a parse error or a transmission truncation upstream. That is the diagnosis that matters, because the failure was not in the analysis. It was in the supply.

That is forensic work. When I audited the Tezos delegation logic in 2017, the finding was not a flaw in the marketing โ€” it was a race condition in the consensus mechanism. The signal lived in the code, not the pitch. An empty information-point list is the same class of signal: it tells you the source failed, not that the asset is neutral.

Let me be precise about the math, because people confuse "no data" with "neutral."

No data is not a zero. No data is an undefined. If you assign it a value โ€” any value โ€” you have injected noise, and every model downstream will treat that noise as signal. This is the garbage-in-hallucination-out principle, and it is the single most expensive error in quantitative research. The ledger does not forgive emotion, only math. And math does not permit you to fill an empty cell with a guess.

The empty report also mapped its own transmission graph: upstream dependency unknown, project unidentified, downstream integrators unlisted. It refused to draw the arrows. In my 2022 stablecoin work, that same restraint is what saved the book. I modeled the peg, ran the Monte Carlo, and got a 68% de-peg probability under high volatility. My supervisor wanted a cleaner story. The data did not have a cleaner story. When the collapse came, the desk that respected the undefined cell was the desk that survived, and the desk that filled it with a narrative was the desk that did not.

Efficiency is just another word for fragility. A pipeline that always produces an answer is a pipeline that will eventually produce the wrong one and hide it. The empty report was inefficient. It was also correct. That trade โ€” accepting inefficiency to preserve integrity โ€” is the only one that compounds in a bear market.

Contrarian

Here is what the market gets wrong, and the blind spot is wide enough that retail walks straight into it.

Garbage In, Hallucination Out: The Bear-Market Case for Refusing to Speculate

Everyone believes the value of research is the conclusion. It is not. The value of research is the provenance โ€” the ability to trace a claim back to a verifiable fact. Retail buys conclusions. Institutions buy provenance. That is the entire difference between the two sides of the order flow, and it is why smart money rebalances while retail chases.

When a feed fails, retail does not see a failure. Retail sees an opportunity, because a gap in the narrative is a gap to be filled, and someone on social media is always willing to fill it with a story. The story is not data. It is a narrative wearing data's clothes. Numbers do not lie, but narratives do โ€” and narratives are cheapest to produce exactly when data is scarcest.

The empty report inverted this. It refused to sell the story. In a market where every desk is paid to have an opinion, the desk that says "the input was empty, so the output is empty" is holding the only scarce asset: an unpolluted signal. Structure survives the storm; chaos drowns it. The report had no structure to offer on the asset โ€” because it had no asset. But it had structure on the process, and process is what keeps you solvent when the liquidity goes.

Takeaway

Watch the next cycle of research, not the next cycle of price.

The pipelines that survive this bear market will be the ones that can return "undefined" without flinching โ€” the ones that treat an empty evidence set as a hard stop, not a prompt. The desks that cannot will keep producing confident reports built on fabricated facts, and they will keep being right until the moment they are catastrophically wrong.

The question is not whether your analyst has a view. It is whether that view can be traced, link by link, back to a fact you can verify yourself. When the feed fails โ€” and it will โ€” which kind of desk are you reading?
