The Onchain Turn: Binance, Coinbase, Revolut, Nubank, and the Quiet End of the Brokerage Monopoly

CryptoTiger
Every chart is a frozen moment of human emotion. In a bear market, the most revealing charts are not price charts. They are product announcements. This week, a phrase moved across four balance sheets in four jurisdictions: Binance, Nubank, Coinbase, and Revolut are preparing new onchain products. The details are thin: no tokenomics, no architecture, no audit. But the signal is not thin. It is structural. When the largest distribution networks in crypto and digital banking begin building toward settlement layers rather than only listing assets, the narrative is shifting. History repeats, but the narrative layer shifts. The old brokerage model rented users and sold them exposure. The onchain model wants to own the rail beneath the exposure. Context. Recall the cycles. In 2017, the ICO narrative promised disintermediation, but exchanges became gatekeepers. In 2020, DeFi Summer proved that automated market makers could replace order books. In 2022, Terra, Three Arrows, and FTX taught a brutal lesson: code without trust architecture is just a faster way to lose money. In 2024, the Bitcoin ETF approval moved the asset from cypherpunk gold to digital reserve asset. Now, in a bear market where every rally is sold, platforms realize that listing fees and trading spreads are cyclical. Onchain products offer something more durable: recurring fee streams from settlement, payments, lending, and identity. The four names matter because they represent four regulatory perimeters. Binance is global and crypto-native, with deep liquidity and compliance scrutiny. Coinbase is US-regulated and listed, which makes every product a securities-law question. Revolut is a digital bank with UK and EU licenses, so it lives inside banking rules. Nubank is a Brazilian fintech giant with tens of millions of retail users and a central bank that has already experimented with digital payments. Their common move is not a coincidence. It is convergence. Each wants to bring onchain access into an interface that ordinary users already trust. The challenge, as the original signal noted, is that this challenges traditional brokerage models and regulatory frameworks. That is not a side effect. That is the product. Core. What does an onchain product actually mean? The phrase is vague enough to cover a self-custodial wallet, an embedded DeFi aggregator, a tokenized money market fund, a stablecoin payment rail, an onchain brokerage account, or a layer-2 network with a branded front end. The likely architecture is hybrid: a regulated front end, a permissioned on-ramp, and a smart contract back end. Account abstraction and smart wallets make this possible. They allow gas sponsorship, session keys, social recovery, and batched transactions. For a Nubank user in Sao Paulo or a Revolut user in London, the experience could feel like a banking app. Under the surface, however, the trust model changes completely. Here is the first real tension. If the platform controls recovery, the product is custodial with extra steps. If the user controls keys, the platform must solve KYC and AML without seeing the transaction graph. That is why the regulatory perimeter becomes the product. Coinbase will likely push for broker-dealer or alternative trading system treatment in the US. Revolut may frame products as e-money or payment services. Nubank may work within Brazil's Pix and open finance rails. Binance will navigate a patchwork of jurisdictions. The company that solves compliance without destroying self-custody creates the template. Value capture is the second tension. If these products run on public chains, fees leak to layer-1 validators, layer-2 sequencers, stablecoin issuers, and oracle networks. If the platforms launch their own chains or appchains, they can capture sequencing fees, MEV, and stablecoin float. That is the difference between a feature and a business. In my 2024 institutional brief, I mapped Bitcoin's narrative from cypherpunk gold to digital reserve asset. The same institutional logic now moves to brokerage rails. Institutions do not want to hold tokens. They want yield, compliance, and audit trails. Retail users do not want to manage seed phrases. They want safety, recovery, and low fees. The onchain product must satisfy both. I have watched interoperability debates for years. IBC proved that chains can communicate elegantly, but the application layer often fails to capture value when the asset is not native. The lesson applies here. Interoperability without distribution is a demo. Distribution without compliance is a liability. The winners will be platforms that turn compliance walls into API calls. The refrain that liquidity is fragmented usually serves product roadmaps. Real liquidity is gated. A Coinbase user and a Nubank user cannot share a pool without crossing identity perimeters. The onchain product is an attempt to monetize that gate. Based on my audit experience, most retail losses come from operational failure, not market direction. A lost key, a wrong bridge, a malicious approval. These products can reduce that friction. But they can also hide it. If a user believes they own an asset while the platform retains freeze and recovery rights, the trust gap is larger than a centralized exchange. The code is permanent; the meaning is fluid. In a bear market, survival matters more than yield. The product that wins is not the one with the highest APR. It is the one that never forces a user to think about a seed phrase, a bridge, or a gas token. Contrarian. The popular narrative is that this is democratization. I see re-intermediation. Binance, Coinbase, Revolut, and Nubank already own the user relationship. Onchain products let them extend that relationship into settlement, where the margin is higher and the moat is deeper. If the products are truly permissionless, regulators will resist. If they are permissioned, DeFi natives will call them theater. The likely outcome is permissioned DeFi: allowlisted pools, identity attestations, wallets with recovery agents, and validators that can freeze assets under legal order. That is not a betrayal of crypto. It is the price of scale. The bigger risk is narrative mismatch. Users may hear onchain and assume self-custody. Platforms may hear onchain and mean blockchain-settled. Those are not the same thing. In the next downturn, the difference will be visible. The failure mode is not a smart contract exploit. It is a user discovering that the onchain account was never theirs. The second failure mode is regulatory shock. If a major market defines these products as unregistered securities or unlicensed banking, the rollout stalls. The third is competitive: existing DeFi protocols may integrate the same users faster through wallet-level abstractions. Takeaway. Watch three signals. First, who holds the keys and recovery. Second, where the fee revenue accrues. Third, which licenses the platforms use. If these products ship with genuine self-custody and transparent revenue, they can become the trust stack for tokenized assets and AI agents. If they ship as custodial wrappers, they are brokerages with blockchain branding. Clarity emerges only after the noise subsides. The next bull market may not be led by a token. It may be led by a login screen that quietly settles onchain. The question is whether users will own the rail or merely rent it.
